Like I said to ‘P, after forking over an extravagant sum as rent in Lagos, there’s almost nothing left for a proper bed frame (which also costs tons these days). Or sometimes, the room’s so tiny, it feels like a bed frame takes over the entire space. Having the mattress on the bedroom floor seems like the easiest option. But if you’re like me and want a frame of some sort, there are options available. A crate/pallet bed is one of such options. It’s cheaper than most of the bed frames you’ll find and your local carpenter can help you put one together.
I loved the idea as soon as ‘P suggested it and immediately took to Pinterest (as always) to find ways to spruce it up. And because I’m nice, I’ll share some of these ideas with you. You’re welcome.
- Paint it.
If you do not like the idea of exposed/unpolished wood, there’s nothing stopping you from using a coat or two of paint. You can DIY, no need to pay someone to do that. Have some leftover paint around? Get a brush and get to work. You can go for whatever colour you like (but it’s me, so I’m digging white, of course).
- Make it wide.
If you’re like me, having books, the PC and other knickknacks sharing your bed space at night, you should probably make extra space for them. Go for a pallet that is wider than the size of your mattress and voila!
- Get a headboard.
The pallet bed is usually without a headboard, but if you want one, there’s nothing stopping you. And you can go to town! Use whatever pattern/design you want, doesn’t even have to be the same pallet design. Or you can totally skip the headboard and create a wall gallery with frames to create the illusion of a headboard.
- Light it up.
This idea is one I particularly like. Glow in the dark, because I can be weird sometimes.
- Extra Storage
Why not? If one of the reasons you choose a pallets bed is to save space, makes sense that you create extra storage out of it, no?
Besides make bed frames, there are a gazillion other things you can do with wooden pallets/crates. Like this one that I’m dying to make happen:
