The Artiste’s Playlist is a new series on the blog that features some of our favourite musicians sharing a short playlist with songs they love, because we are interested in what our faves are listening to and we’re sure you are too. Starting off this series with the amazing singer/songwriter Lindsey Abudei whose music we featured in our Nigerian Alternative Playlist. Enjoy…

I have been asked to make a short playlist of about 15 songs. I’m excited to talk about the music I’m listening to but also sad that I can’t put out everything I want to share; especially ’cause I had to list songs that are accessible on SoundCloud.

I’ve got about half a dozen playlists from Vinyl Love (For old school songs) to Placebo (For trance movements) 😀

Anyway, as painful as this was to exclude so many from this list, these are the songs I’ve chosen:

  • 1.The Curse | Agnes Obel

I had randomly stumbled on Run Cried The Crawling, and decided to get her album, Aventine. When I settled in to listen, I fell in love with The Curse. Played it over and over.

  • 2. Here | Alessia Cara

I found this song when I was scouting for new music on SoundCloud.I was checking out songs randomly and voila!

The arrangement on the Isaac Hayes sample is amazing.

  • 3. No Room For Doubt | Lianne La Havas

I have been a fan of Lianne La Havas from day 1. I loved her Lost and Found EP, her debut album, Is Your Love Big Enough, and now loving, Blood, her sophomore album.
The guitars here are so beautiful. This song has been perfect company on those crazy days.

  • 4. Come Back | Tom Misch

This is such a feel-good tune for me. I never mind that it is instrumentals only. Totally love the way the piano, the bass and electric guitar come together.

  • 5. South American Getaway | Burt Bacharach

This will fit perfectly in my Vinyl Love(old school) playlist.
It is mostly instrumentals but there is something nostalgic about it. Reminds me of the days when my Dad played vinyls of Andy Williams, Jim Reeves, James Last.
I am a sucker for melodies and harmonies especially those from the 50s and 60s.

  • 6. Ginger Me Slowly | Somi

I am yet to tire of listening to this song. I really like the bass here. It’s so obvious 🙂 Somi is so soothing and her control in this, is something to envy.

  • 7. All The Things | Lizbet Sempa

I can never really say what this song does to me. I have been in love with this song for a while now. Maybe when you listen to it, you’d get what I mean.

  • 8. Lingus | Snarky Puppy

I love Snarky Puppy. Being at one of their live sessions is on my bucket list. I think they are amazing.

  • 9. Hearts A Mess | Gotye

I remember the first time I heard this song. I couldn’t move my body for a while. It was just my fingers pressing the rewind button everytime it ended.

  • 10. Tidal Tendencies | Hawk House

They’ve got the A Tribe Called Quest or De La Soul vibe. Really cool.

  • 11. Settle Down | Kimbra

I heard this song a couple of years ago during one of my music dates. I liked it so much, I looked for the video and a live session recording of it. I think she’s an amazing musician and she’s tech savvy too. Extra points for her:)

  • 12. Suddenly | MNEK

This makes me feel the same way I do when I listen to Boyz II Men’s I Do. I think you’d really like this one.

  • 13. Last Stand | Kwabs

I totally love the tone of his voice.

  • 14. Love Love Love | Of Monsters And Men

It’s such an earnest song. Bare and piercing.

  • 15. I Won’t Complain | Benjamin Clementine

I found Benjamin Clementine on YouTube. Was watching live performances as I usually do; I saw his name and thought he seemed interesting.
I have been raving about him since then. I think he’s so rad. When he sings and plays the piano, he’s kinda hard to ignore.

I couldn’t help reaching the maximum of songs for this list.I hope you enjoy these as much as I do.

Lindsey.
