Okhai Akhigbe (A.K.A Leankid) is a Nigerian freelance illustrator, digital artist, and designer whose work focuses mostly on fashion. Gone are the days where fashion illustration was not taken seriously and illustrators were considered anything but artists. Yes, fashion photography may have trumped illustrations a while back, but best believe, illustrations are no longer being taken for granted and like this article says,
Elegant sketches that were undervalued and ubiquitous in the fashion pages from the Twenties to the Sixties are becoming prized – and have won their own art exhibition.
Glory!!! Anyway, this post is not about making a case for illustrators in general, but to present the beauty that is Okhai’s art. I have such a tremedous respect for self-taught artists and to learn that Okhai is self-taught completely blew me out of the water. These are some of my favourites from his body of work…
I especially love the work he did for TwentySix..
…and this lovely campaign/lookbook illustration for Nineteen Ninety One which makes me wish I could go online now and order one of these oversized coats. (But the way the heat in Nigeria is set up…)
